Sorry for the delay, the editor retired from game 4 with a dislocated shoulder and its been a bit tough typing for a couple of days. The Wombats had their second win in the first game on field 1 on Friday and then went into a match playing a mob of idiots who were trying to win the first grade grand final and ensure that they sent someone home in a box. Well, they partly succeeded but the Wombats stood up to this lot and a formal complaint was made as to not in the spirit of the game, and aparently there were previous complaints.
Game 3 on Friday arvo was tough, hot and humid and we went down. Then as usual, there was a great fun friendly on Saturday morning for our last match and we lent a few turn coats to the Gorillas who didnt have a full team. Amazing try scoring feats by Brian and great try assists by Cyril. Artie turned up from the massage tent ready for the game after it finished and we are still trying to find Bob Berry?
all up a great year, 3 wins, and everybody could at least walk home. It was great from my perspective to see some young old faces like Dewy, meet a few of the Paterson and Stroud boys and a particular thanks to Jason Townsend, who does a hell of a lot of work putting this together to make it a successful team and trip. Someone buy him a beer for me please…. couple of early photos on the right, click to view, and more coming thanks to Lisa…. and thanks for the jumper Shane and Jason, much appreciated,.
And this years award for most stylish shorts goes to…… Troopy.
Well the Masters started with a win. Our first game against Singleton was won 5 tries to 4. A great effort from this years large playing group and watching the two Townsend brothers cut them up, backing each other up the middle. It certainly helps in the heat of the Gold Coast. 3 injuries from the first game, Bob Berry did a hammy and may not be back on the field, another hammie and an ankle to others, but not as serious. Score 16 -12 for the wombats
Ando, Pies and JR all got through in one piece and the win made us put a call in to the Mythbusters TV show, who were coming over to Australia to test the theory that we can’t win without Codo.
Sorry Codo, this one is busted.
Game 2 saw us go in against the Belconnen team, which included the likes of David Barnhill (Ex ST George and Austalian forward). They came out of the blocks and quickly had two tries down the left wing and converted them. The Wombats fought back however, and a strong performance from the Patterson boys and the rest of the forwards and backs. Being an old Dragons Tragic, I took great pleasure getting up close to Mr Barnhill and putting him on the ground once (nicely that is). We lost this one, but only just 18 to 14.
So Day 1, 1 Win and 1 Loss and 3 games coming up tomorrow so the boys have retired to the bottom bar at the Grand Hotel for anaesthetics and tactical debriefing..
The long awaited draw for the 2011 Masters has been released and it’s not a surprise that the Williams valley Wombats are in action on all 3 days of competition.

?Another update on what’s been happening and what’s planned.
First and foremost the Masters is definitely still on. That part of Queensland was not affected by the recent flooding. That’s the official word from the ARL. The Wombats will, this year have record representation at the Masters, with 31 Players & Officials attending. Our teammates (in no particular order) are;
Andrew Taylor (P), Anthony Martin (P), Barry Clifton (P), Bob Berry (P), Brad Gallaway (P), Brett Gallimore (P), Brian Simpson (P), Craig Walters (P), Dave Coyle (P), Doug Hinton (O), George Trappell (P), James Hooke (P), Jason Buckley (P), Jason Townsend (P), John Styles (P), Kent Dew (P), Mark Tull (P), Michael Jones (O), Michael Townsend (P), Murray Taylor (P), Neil Anderson (P), Ray Styles (O), Scott Fisher (P), Shane Pritchard (P), Steve Daughtery (P), Steve Platt (P), Tim Brown (O), Tony Townsend (P), Wal Keppie (P), Wayne Troop (P), Wayne Vanderburg (P) Russell Gore (P) + (ET).
As you can see, some new faces and some old ones returning, which all should point to a good time had by everyone.
The Bank Hotel has been booked for Friday 25th February for our fundraising sportsman’s night. We are currently working on a guest for the night and will inform everyone when more information is available, but all everyone has to do at the moment is to lock the date into your calendar and harass your friends to come, as the more that are there the merrier the night.
A few of the squad have expressed interest in having a training run / get together before we go. A game of touch footy or tennis has been suggested followed by a BBQ, with 13th or 20th Feb possible dates. Let me know if you are interested and we will get it up and running.
Payments have been trickling through quite well so thanks to everyone, but we need everyone to fix up there remaining balance as soon as they can. I can’t give an exact price yet on what the cost will be as I’m still waiting on some accounts and playing around trying to get airfares for as cheap as we can but as a guide for now;
From Newcastle $500, no airflight $380, playing only $100. I’m sorry I can’t be more precise, but if everyone allows an extra $30 – $40 that will be all that’s required. Still a cheap trip when you consider we will be getting over $200 in merchandise all the rest. Can’t think of anything more at present, but will forward the draw and any important info when it becomes available. If you have any questions send me an email or give me a call.
I’m just refreshing everyone’s memory about the Wombats golf day which as you know is on Sunday 12th December. The format will be similar to last year, which was a 3 Person Ambrose over 9 holes at Dungog Golf Club (if anyone’s feeling really keen and has some spare time they can do up a flyer and distribute). An approximate timetable will be;
9:30am Breakfast & registrations
10:00am Tee off
2:00pm Presentation of Awards
2:30pm Novelty Games
3:30pm + Days Post-mortem
To make things a little easier on the day and for catering, it would be appreciated if you could let me know if you’ll be attending (and any others you are bringing with you or even if you can’t make it) and if you are in a team of 3 or need to be placed into one. Don’t stress if you don’t have any golf clubs as we will put you with someone that has. All you need is a sense of humour, a healthy thirst and appetite, which we know all the Wombats have.
It will also be a good opportunity for anyone who hasn’t contributed towards the trip to do so, especially those requiring airfares as i’m waiting until you pay something before I book your flights. I’ll also give everyone an update on the trip’s status at the golf day. If you have any questions just let me know, otherwise i’ll see you all on the 12th if not before.
